Superficial Digital Flexor
/// STANDARD MORPHOLOGY // MYOLOGY
📝 STANDARD DESCRIPTION:
Type: Intrinsic, Flexor Group

Origin: Medial epicondyle of humerus

Insertion: Palmar surface of Middle Phalanx (P2) of Digits III & IV (via manica flexoria)

Function: Flexes proximal/middle phalangeal joints (fetlock/pastern) and carpus.
📚 DETAILED DESCRIPTION:
THE MANICA FLEXORIA CONTAINER

A key component of the reciprocal apparatus and digital support system, distinct in bovines due to the bidactyl arrangement.

SYNOVIAL SHEATH COURSE: Tendon passes through the carpal canal (carpal sheath) deep to the flexor retinaculum alongside the DDF. At the carpus, it is covered by synovial membrane—prone to tenosynovitis.

MANICA FLEXORIA ARCHITECTURE: At the fetlock level, the tendon bifurcates (one branch per digit). Each branch forms a ring-like structure called the Manica Flexoria ('flexor sleeve') that wraps around the Deep Digital Flexor tendon. This allows the DDF to pass through to the distal phalanx while the SDF inserts on the middle phalanx (P2).

BIDACTYL DIVISION: Unlike the horse where the SDF splits to surround the DDF in the pattern of a U, in cattle the two separate digit branches allow independent suspension of each claw.

INSERTION: Terminal branches insert on the palmar surface of P2 (middle phalanx/pastern bone) of both digits III and IV.

// COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS

HORSE Single manica flexoria arrangement around single DDF tendon; inserts on P1 and P2.
DOG Single tendon to each digit; similar P2 insertion.
CLINICAL RELEVANCE
Manica Flexoria Syndrome: Damage to the manica allows SDF tendon displacement. Tenosynovitis: SDF tendon within digital sheath commonly affected in 'septic arthritis' extension.

The Why of Veterinary Anatomy

Explore the hidden mechanics of why structures are present, absent or modified across domestic and wildlife species—and how each anatomical design supports movement, function and clinical practice.
