Function: Extends lateral digit (Digit IV) specifically; allows independent movement.

THE LATERAL DIGIT AUTONOMY SYSTEM

A smaller extensor specifically serving the lateral digit (Digit IV), allowing independent extension and some abduction of the lateral claw.

EGINAL COMPLEXITY: Originates not just from the lateral epicondyle but also from the lateral collateral ligament of the elbow, embedding it in the lateral stability system of the elbow joint.

DISTINCT TENDON PATH: The tendon passes through the lateral collateral ligament of the carpus (staying lateral) to insert specifically on P2 and P3 of digit IV only. This maintains separate control of the lateral claw.

COMPARATIVE SIGNIFICANCE: Unlike the horse where the LDE tendon joins the CDE tendon distally, in the ox they remain distinct throughout their course, allowing cattle to manipulate the lateral claw somewhat independently—useful for traction on uneven terrain or when one claw is injured.
