Type: Fascial/Muscular remnants

Components: Lumbricals, Interdigital muscles

Function: Adduction of claws (prevent splaying); minor proprioceptive roles.
📚 DETAILED DESCRIPTION:
THE CLAW STABILIZERS

Small vestigial structures between the flexor tendons and digits, distinct from the major muscles proximal to the carpus.

LUMBRICALS: Small muscles originating from the DDF tendon and inserting on proximal phalanges. Serve minor proprioceptive and weak flexor roles, helping coordinate flexor tendon tension between the two digits.

INTERDIGITAL MUSCLES: Small bands connecting the proximal phalanges of digits III and IV, aiding in adduction of the claws (pulling them together during placement) to prevent excessive splaying. This maintains the 'cloven' appearance and functional integrity.

ANNULAR LIGAMENTS: Fibrous bands (superficial and deep digital annular ligaments) hold flexor tendons against the palmar aspect of phalanges, maintaining mechanical advantage and preventing bowstringing during flexion.

FASCIAL RETAINERS: Dense connective tissue bands maintaining digital tendon position—critical for surgery to prevent tendon displacement.

HORSE No interdigital muscles (single digit); different annular system.
DOG Multiple interossei and lumbricals corresponding to 4-5 digits.
CLINICAL RELEVANCE
Interdigital Fibroma: Hyperplasia of interdigital skin into a 'corn.' Tendon Displacement: Annular ligament rupture causes bowstringing of flexor tendons. Claw Integrity: Loss of adduction function leads to splayed toes and hoof wear abnormalities.
