Anconeus
/// STANDARD MORPHOLOGY // MYOLOGY
📝 STANDARD DESCRIPTION:
Type: Intrinsic, Brachial (Synthetic)

Origin: Lateral supracondylar crest of humerus

Insertion: Lateral aspect of olecranon

Function: Extends elbow; prevents joint capsule pinching during extension.
📚 DETAILED DESCRIPTION:
THE JOINT PROTECTOR

A small muscle located deep to the lateral head of the triceps, serving a specialized protective function.

STABILIZOR FUNCTION: While it assists in elbow extension, its primary role is mechanical protection. During terminal elbow extension, the anconeus provides caudolateral support preventing the olecranon from displacing medially while simultaneously keeping the joint capsule taut.

CAPSULAR PROTECTION: Prevents the joint capsule from being pinched between the olecranon and the humeral condyle during full extension—a common source of pain and synovitis if not mechanically protected.

RELATIONSHIPS: Lies directly deep to the lateral head of triceps; identified during deep dissections of the lateral elbow approaches.

// COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS

DOG Similar function; more distinct separation from triceps.
HORSE Present but less distinct; often considered part of triceps complex.
CLINICAL RELEVANCE
El Joint Approach: Must be identified and preserved during lateral arthrotomy approaches to prevent post-operative capsular entrapment.
Comparative Veterinary Biomechanics

The Why of Veterinary Anatomy

Explore the hidden mechanics of why structures are present, absent or modified across domestic and wildlife species—and how each anatomical design supports movement, function and clinical practice.
