Structure: Two distinct muscular bellies (Medial & Lateral)

Origin: Lateral epicondyle of humerus

Insertion: Extensor processes of distal phalanges (P3) of Digits III & IV

Function: Extends carpus and digital joints of both digits.
📚 DETAILED DESCRIPTION:
THE DORSAL DIGITAL EXTENSOR COMPLEX

More complex than the equine version due to the bidactyl (cloven hoof) anatomy, consisting of two distinct muscular bellies serving the two functional digits.

DUAL BELLY ARCHITECTURE:
Medial Belly: Tendon bifurcates to insert on extensor process of distal phalanx (P3) of medial digit (III) and middle phalanx (P2) of same digit
Lateral Belly: Tendon splits to serve extensor processes of P3 of BOTH digits (III and IV)

BIDACTYL FUNCTIONAL COMPROMISE: This bifurcation pattern reflects the functional adaptation to two weight-bearing digits. The medial belly focuses on digit III; the lateral belly serves both, creating a complex coordination mechanism for even hoof placement.

SURGICAL ACCESSIBILITY: Tendons are palpable on the dorsal surface of the cannon bone (Mc III/IV), allowing easy evaluation of tendon integrity and synovial sheath distension. Critical landmark for distal limb nerve block evaluation.
