📝 STANDARD DESCRIPTION:
Type: Extrinsic, Superficial Layer

Origin: Mastoid process of temporal bone [Cleidocephalicus pars mastoidea]; Nuchal crest/ ligament [Cleidocephalicus pars occipitalis]

Insertion: Deltoid tuberosity and crest of humerus

Function: Principal protractor of the limb; flexes neck laterally (unilateral) or extends head/neck (bilateral).
📚 DETAILED DESCRIPTION:
THE PRIMARY PROTRACTOR

This compound muscle forms the dorsal border of the jugular groove and represents the principal engine for limb advancement (protraction). It is divided by a vestigial clavicular intersection (remnant of reduced clavicle) into two distinct parts.

ANATOMICAL SUBDIVISIONS:
Cleidocephalicus: Proximal segment attaching head to limb, further divided into:
- Pars Mastoidea: Attaches to mastoid process of temporal bone—powerful neck flexor
- Pars Occipitalis: Attaches to nuchal crest and ligament—head extensor
Cleidobrachialis: Distal segment from clavicular intersection to deltoid tuberosity and humeral crest—direct limb puller

CLAVICULAR VESTIGE: The subdivision represents the vestigial clavicle (intersection), reminding us that cattle have no bony girdle attachment—this muscle IS the strut replacing the clavicle found in primates.

FUNCTIONAL MECHANICS: Most powerful protractor of the free limb. Its line of pull from the head/neck to the humerus allows the animal to swing the heavy limb forward using trunk momentum rather than intrinsic shoulder power alone.

HORSE Divides into cleidocephalicus and cleidobrachialis; omotransversarius is fused to it.
HUMAN Functionally equivalent to the human sternocleidomastoid and deltoid connections.
