Special Ligament:
- Intercapital (Conjugal) Ligament: Crosses the floor of the vertebral canal — connects HEADS of right and left ribs of the same pair THROUGH the intervertebral disc.
- Present from 2nd to 10th (or 11th) ribs.
- Holds disc in place; prevents disc protrusion in this region.
Movement: Pump-handle (up-down) + bucket-handle (out-in) — produces ribs swinging during breathing.

HOW RIBS HOOK ONTO THE SPINE
Each rib is attached to the vertebral column by two small synovial joints working as a unit:
1. CAPITULAR JOINT (head of rib):
The head of the rib sits in a 'socket' formed by the demi-facets of two consecutive vertebrae (one in front + one behind) plus the intervertebral disc between them. So one rib head touches TWO vertebrae.
2. COSTOTRANSVERSE JOINT (tubercle of rib):
The tubercle of the rib articulates with the transverse process facet of its own (caudal) vertebra.
These two joints share a common axis, and the rib swings around this axis like a door on hinges. The result is a combined 'pump-handle' + 'bucket-handle' motion: cranial ribs lift the sternum forward (pump-handle), caudal ribs swing outward (bucket-handle). Together, this is what enlarges the chest in inspiration.
SPECIAL: INTERCAPITAL (CONJUGAL) LIGAMENT
This is a unique ligament in the thoracic region. It is a strong fibrous band that runs across the floor of the vertebral canal, joining the head of the right rib to the head of the left rib of the SAME pair, passing OVER the intervertebral disc.
• Present from the 2nd rib to about the 10th-11th rib.
• Function: Holds the disc firmly in place from above and prevents the disc from bulging up into the spinal canal.
• Clinical importance: This is why disc problems (slipped disc) are very rare between T2 and T10/11 in animals — the disc is locked down by this ligament.
OTHER LIGAMENTS:
• Radiate ligament: Fan-shaped, around the head of rib, holds it in the socket.
• Costotransverse ligament: Between neck of rib and transverse process.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE
Why thoracic discs rarely 'slip' (T2-T10): The intercapital ligament guards the disc. Disc disease is therefore most common in the neck and lumbar spine, and in the last (caudal) thoracic discs where this ligament is missing.
