HOW RIBS JOIN THE STERNUM
1. COSTOCHONDRAL JOINT: Where bone meets cartilage on each rib. This is a synchondrosis — the two pieces are joined directly by cartilage with no joint cavity, so there is essentially no movement here. It is the 'springy' part of the rib that allows the chest wall to flex slightly during breathing.
2. STERNOCOSTAL JOINT: Where the costal cartilages of true (sternal) ribs meet the sides of the sternum. These are true synovial joints with small joint cavities and capsules, allowing the ribs to move slightly up and down during breathing. In ox, there are 8 such joints on each side.
