📚 DETAILED DESCRIPTION:
THE PASTERN HINGE

The PIP joint represents the transitional articulation between the mobile fetlock and rigid coffin, providing secondary cushioning while maintaining alignment of the digital column.

ARTICULAR ARCHITECTURE: The condylar geometry of P1 fits into corresponding glenoid cavities of P2 (long pastern). The joint capsule is tight with limited volume—effusion causes obvious distension.

PALMAR LIGAMENTS: Dense fibrocartilaginous plates replacing the joint capsule palmarly, preventing hyperextension while allowing full flexion. These plates blend with the collateral ligaments and the fibrocartilage of the foot.

FUNCTIONAL ROLE: Provides 40-50° flexion range; works in concert with the fetlock to absorb ground impact before forces reach the coffin joint. The limited lateral mobility here is compensated by slight rotation at the fetlock level.
