📝 STANDARD DESCRIPTION:
Synovial compound hinge (ginglymus) effectively functioning as dual joints for digits III and IV.

Articular surfaces: Distal metacarpus (Mc III/IV) presents two distinct trochleae separated by sagittal notch articulating with proximal phalanges (P1) of digits III and IV; four proximal sesamoid bones (two per digit) form palmar articulation.

Suspensory ligament (interosseus) bifurcates distally into medial and lateral branches inserting on respective digit's sesamoids with extensor branches connecting to digital extensor tendons.

Sesamoidean ligaments: Cruciate (deep) and oblique (middle) transfer suspensory tension to P1 preventing ground collapse; straight ligament absent (unlike horse).

Interdigital ligaments (proximal and distal cruciate) prevent splaying of claws; laxity causes interdigital hyperplasia (corns).

Normal hyperextension ('sinking') visible during weight-bearing; palmar pouch approach for arthrocentesis.
📚 DETAILED DESCRIPTION:
THE DUAL-SUSPENSORY APPARATUS

The fetlock manages the biomechanics of cloven hooves through a complex array of suspensory and interdigital ligaments designed to support massive weight on two digits.

SUSPENSORY ARCHITECTURE: The interosseous muscle/ligament (retaining contractile tissue in cattle unlike equine suspensory) originates from proximal metacarpus and distal carpals. It runs in the palmar groove of the cannon bone, bifurcating into medial and lateral branches at the distal third. Each branch attaches to the axial and abaxial sesamoids of respective digits.

EXTENSOR BRANCHES: From sesamoid insertions, tendinous slips course dorsally to join common and lateral digital extensor tendons. This mechanically couples the suspensory apparatus with digital extension—when the fetlock sinks during weight-bearing, the digit is automatically positioned for the next advancement.

SESAMOIDEAN LIGAMENT COMPLEX:
Cruciate (Deep): Short strong bands originating from sesamoid bases crossing diagonally to insert on palmar rim of P1
Oblique (Middle): Originate from sesamoids inserting on triangular palmar area of P1 (long pastern)
Straight Ligament: Absent or functionally replaced in cattle; load bearing falls to cruciate/oblique system and interdigital ligaments

INTERDIGITAL LIGAMENT SYSTEM:
Proximal: Connects P1 of digits III and IV restricting independent proximal movement
Distal (Cruciate): X-shaped fibers connecting distal P1 to proximal P2 of opposing digits at pastern level
These prevent splaying (abduction) of claws; rupture or laxity (common in heavy bulls/concrete housing) causes toe separation and interdigital hyperplasia (fibroma/corns).

PALMAR POUCH: The joint capsule pouches proximally between cannon bone and suspensory ligament—primary access site for lavage in septic arthritis secondary to foot rot or penetrating wounds.
