Spiral colon = a characteristic flat, disc-shaped coil in cattle and small ruminants with centripetal and centrifugal turns. It is a useful identifying feature but not an isolated diagnostic test.
• The bovine cecum occupies the right abdomen and may be approached surgically from the right flank when clinically indicated; cecocentesis or biopsy must not be presented as a routine landmark procedure without a current clinical protocol.
• Functions: water absorption, microbial fermentation (cecum), faecal pellet formation.
• Rectum is covered later under pelvic viscera.
📚 DETAILED DESCRIPTION:

Bovine Large Intestine

Cecum: A blind tube ~75 cm long, lying in the dorsal right flank. The base receives the ileum and continues as the colon; the free apex points caudally. The cecum is the site of secondary microbial fermentation in ruminants.

Ascending Colon: Has proximal, spiral and distal loops. In ruminants the spiral loop (ansa spiralis) forms a relatively flat disc with centripetal turns, a central flexure and centrifugal turns. Pigs also have a spiral ascending colon, but it is cone-shaped rather than a flat ruminant disc.

Transverse Colon: Crosses the midline cranial to the root of the mesentery.

Descending Colon: Passes caudally and continues at the pelvic inlet as the rectum; cattle do not possess a human-like sigmoid colon.

Surgical importance: Cecal dilatation/torsion in dairy cattle presents as right-sided ping. The right flank is the standard surgical window (cecotomy).

Blood supply: Cranial mesenteric artery (cecum, ascending, transverse) and caudal mesenteric artery (descending colon, rectum).

OX Spiral colon present (centripetal + centrifugal coils). Cecum simple blind sac.
HORSE Massive cecum (~30 L) with bands (taenia) and sacculations (haustra). Large colon U-shaped with pelvic, sternal, diaphragmatic flexures — major colic sites.
DOG Small comma-shaped cecum. Simple short colon (no spiral). No taenia/haustra.
PIG Spiral colon also present, but spiral coils are conical (cone-shaped) rather than flat as in ox.
CLINICAL RELEVANCE
Cecal Dilatation/Volvulus (cattle): May produce a right-sided ping; treatment depends on displacement, viability and severity and can require right-flank surgery. Equine Colic: The pelvic flexure is a common site of large-colon impaction. Megacolon (cats/dogs): Chronic constipation can produce a dilated, poorly motile colon.
