Cecum: A blind tube ~75 cm long, lying in the dorsal right flank. The base receives the ileum and continues as the colon; the free apex points caudally. The cecum is the site of secondary microbial fermentation in ruminants.
Ascending Colon: Has proximal, spiral and distal loops. In ruminants the spiral loop (ansa spiralis) forms a relatively flat disc with centripetal turns, a central flexure and centrifugal turns. Pigs also have a spiral ascending colon, but it is cone-shaped rather than a flat ruminant disc.
Transverse Colon: Crosses the midline cranial to the root of the mesentery.
Descending Colon: Passes caudally and continues at the pelvic inlet as the rectum; cattle do not possess a human-like sigmoid colon.
Surgical importance: Cecal dilatation/torsion in dairy cattle presents as right-sided ping. The right flank is the standard surgical window (cecotomy).
Blood supply: Cranial mesenteric artery (cecum, ascending, transverse) and caudal mesenteric artery (descending colon, rectum).
