📝 STANDARD DESCRIPTION:
X-Ray Basics:
• Discovered by W.C. Roentgen, 1895.
• X-rays = high-energy electromagnetic radiation; pass through tissues differentially.
• Bone (calcium) absorbs most X-rays → appears WHITE (radiopaque).
• Air (lung, gas) absorbs least → BLACK (radiolucent).
• Soft tissue & fluid → SHADES OF GREY.

5 Radiographic Densities: Metal > Bone > Soft tissue/Fluid > Fat > Air.

Standard Veterinary Radiographs:
• Lateral (LM/RL).
• Dorso-ventral (DV) or Ventro-dorsal (VD).
• Oblique projections (limbs, skull).

Uses: fractures, foreign bodies, joint disease, cardiac silhouette (Vertebral Heart Score), bladder/kidney stones, dental disease.
📚 DETAILED DESCRIPTION:
RADIOGRAPHY — PRINCIPLES & VETERINARY APPLICATION

X-rays are short-wavelength electromagnetic waves (0.01-10 nm) that penetrate matter; they were discovered by Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen on 8 November 1895 (he won the first Nobel Prize in Physics, 1901).

HOW IT WORKS:
1. X-rays produced in an X-ray tube (high voltage accelerates electrons against a tungsten anode).
2. Beam is directed through the patient.
3. Tissues attenuate the beam differently:
Metal — completely opaque (white).
Bone (calcium) — radiopaque (almost white).
Soft tissue / fluid — intermediate grey.
Fat — slightly darker grey.
Gas / air — radiolucent (black).
4. Remaining X-rays expose film or digital detector → image.

FIVE RADIOGRAPHIC DENSITIES (most → least opaque): Metal → Bone → Soft tissue (= Fluid) → Fat → Gas. Note that soft tissue and fluid have the same density on radiograph — distinguished only by other clues.

STANDARD PROJECTIONS:
Lateral (LL/RL): beam crosses sagittal plane.
Dorso-ventral (DV) / Ventro-dorsal (VD): beam crosses dorsal plane.
Oblique (e.g., DLPMO, DMPLO): for limbs, dental.
Two views minimum (90° apart) for any orthopaedic case → 'rule of two'.

USES IN VETERINARY PRACTICE:
Orthopaedic: fractures, dislocations, OA, hip dysplasia.
Thoracic: cardiac size (Vertebral Heart Score), pneumonia, pleural effusion, pneumothorax, pulmonary masses.
Abdominal: GIT obstruction, foreign bodies, urinary calculi, pregnancy diagnosis (calcified fetus visible after ~45 d in dog; later in larger animals).
Dental: intraoral periapical films.
Contrast studies: Barium swallow (oesophagus), barium series (GIT), IVP/excretory urography (kidneys), myelography (spinal cord).

RADIATION SAFETY:
• ALARA principle — As Low As Reasonably Achievable.
• Lead aprons, thyroid shields, gloves, dosimetry badges.
• Distance + Time + Shielding = the 3 protection principles.
• Pregnant staff cannot operate.

// COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS

CATTLE Limited utility on adults due to size — used mainly for limb fractures, head, calves.
HORSE Standard limb radiographs essential for lameness work-up; 4 views per joint typical.
DOG/CAT Whole-body imaging routine — staple of small-animal practice.
CLINICAL RELEVANCE
Foreign Body: Metal/swallowed objects easy to find. Barium contrast: for radiolucent objects. Pneumoperitoneum: Free gas under diaphragm = bowel rupture emergency.
