Anatomy = the science of the structure of the body and the relationship between its parts. (Greek: ana = up + tome = cutting → 'cutting up').

Main Branches Studied in B.V.Sc:
Gross (Macroscopic) Anatomy — naked-eye study (in dissection hall).
Microscopic Anatomy = Histology — tissue level under microscope.
Cytology — cell-level structure.
Embryology / Developmental Anatomy — formation from fertilization to birth.

WHAT IS VETERINARY ANATOMY?

Anatomy (Gr. ana- = up, tome = cutting) is the foundational science of structure. Veterinary anatomy describes the structure of the bodies of domestic and wild animals and applies that knowledge to clinical practice (surgery, diagnostic imaging, obstetrics, reproductive procedures, post-mortem inspection).

HISTORICAL FATHERS:
Andreas Vesalius — 'father of modern anatomy' (1543, De humani corporis fabrica).
Carlo Ruini — first comparative anatomist of the horse (1598, Anatomia del Cavallo).
Septimus Sisson, R.D. Frandson, Bradley — modern veterinary anatomy textbooks.

BRANCHES IN DETAIL:
Gross Anatomy — methods: dissection, demonstration, plastination, computer simulation.
Histology — paraffin sectioning + H&E staining; light & electron microscopy.
Cytology — cell organelles, junctions; LM/EM/fluorescence.
Embryology — gametogenesis → cleavage → gastrulation → organogenesis → birth. Includes teratology (congenital anomalies).
Comparative Anatomy — homologies/analogies across species (compulsory in vet anatomy: ox vs horse vs dog vs pig vs fowl).
Surface Anatomy — palpable bony, muscular, vascular, lymph-node landmarks of the standing animal.
Applied (Clinical/Surgical) Anatomy — basis for nerve blocks, biopsies, surgical approaches.

METHODS OF STUDY (Practical):
1. Dissection of embalmed cadavers (1 buffalo calf per 24 students per VCI norms).
2. Plastinated specimens (Von Hagens method) — long-lasting, dry, odourless.
3. Models, mannequins, mounted skeletons.
4. Computer simulations & 3D apps (e.g. IVALA, BioDigital).
5. Body-donation programmes (mandatory within 1 year per VCI).

OX Reference species for VCI syllabus — students must know ox anatomy first, then compare.
HORSE Carlo Ruini wrote the first species-specific veterinary anatomy book (1598).
DOG Standard small-animal model for clinical anatomy.
FOWL Avian anatomy (poultry science) is integrated into the same VCI course.
CLINICAL RELEVANCE
The 5 species rule: VCI requires every topic to be presented as 'Ox standard, with differences in horse, dog, pig and fowl.' Always learn the ox first; differences are short add-ons.
