📝 STANDARD DESCRIPTION:
Aesthesiology = study of sense organs (Greek aesthesis = sensation).

Five Special Senses:
1. Vision — Eye (visual receptors in retina).
2. Hearing & Balance — Ear (cochlea + vestibule + semicircular canals).
3. Smell (Olfaction) — Nasal cavity (olfactory mucosa).
4. Taste (Gustation) — Tongue (taste buds in papillae).
5. Touch (Tactile) — Skin (mechanoreceptors, thermoreceptors, nociceptors).

General Senses (somatic + visceral): Pain, Temperature, Pressure, Proprioception, Vibration.
📚 DETAILED DESCRIPTION:
SENSE ORGANS — INTRODUCTION

Sense organs (organa sensuum) are specialised structures equipped with receptors that detect specific stimuli (modalities). They are the gateway by which the nervous system 'feels' the outside world and the internal environment.

FIVE SPECIAL SENSE ORGANS:

1. THE EYE (Visual System):
• Three coats:
Fibrous tunic: sclera + cornea.
Vascular tunic (Uvea): choroid + ciliary body + iris.
Nervous tunic: retina (with rods + cones + bipolar + ganglion cells).
Lens, vitreous + aqueous humour, eyelids, lacrimal apparatus.
• Innervation: optic nerve (CN II), oculomotor (III), trochlear (IV), trigeminal (V), abducens (VI), facial (VII).
• Domestic animals have a reflective tapetum lucidum behind the retina → eye-shine, low-light vision.

2. THE EAR (Hearing + Vestibular):
External ear — pinna, external auditory meatus, tympanic membrane.
Middle ear — air-filled tympanic cavity with 3 ossicles (malleus, incus, stapes), eustachian tube.
Internal ear (labyrinth):
Cochlea — hearing organ (organ of Corti).
Vestibule + 3 semicircular canals — balance/equilibrium.
• Innervation: vestibulocochlear nerve (CN VIII).

3. THE NOSE (Olfaction):
• Olfactory epithelium in dorsal nasal cavity contains olfactory receptor neurons.
• Axons → olfactory nerve (CN I) → olfactory bulb.
Vomeronasal organ (Jacobson's) — accessory olfactory organ for pheromones; basis of Flehmen response in horse, cattle, cat.

4. THE TONGUE (Taste):
• Taste buds in papillae of tongue + soft palate + epiglottis.
• Five primary tastes: sweet, sour, salty, bitter, umami.
• Innervation: facial (VII, anterior 2/3), glossopharyngeal (IX, posterior 1/3), vagus (X, epiglottis).

5. THE SKIN (General senses + integument):
• Mechanoreceptors: Meissner, Pacinian, Merkel, Ruffini.
• Thermoreceptors: warm + cold endings.
• Nociceptors: free nerve endings for pain.
• Hair follicles + sweat glands + sebaceous glands.
Tactile hairs (vibrissae) — sinus hairs around muzzle, eyes; rich in mechanoreceptors.

// COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS

DOG/CAT Tapetum lucidum strongly developed → night vision. Olfactory mucosa area ~10× larger than human.
HORSE Largest eye of any land mammal. Visual streak gives panoramic vision; ~340° field of view.
BIRD Highest visual acuity (raptors). Pecten oculi — vascular projection into vitreous, supplies retina (avascular retina).
CLINICAL RELEVANCE
Otitis Externa: Inflammation of external ear canal — common in floppy-eared dogs. Conjunctivitis & Keratitis: Infection/irritation of conjunctiva or cornea. Vestibular Disease: Head tilt, nystagmus, ataxia — central or peripheral.
