These three nerves exit together (via Jugular Foramen in ox) and function as a complex for swallowing, vocalization, and visceral autonomic control. They are the interface between the brain and the thoraco-abdominal viscera.
Functions:
Clinical: Damage causes dysphagia (difficulty swallowing) and loss of gag reflex.
In the ruminant, the Vagus is the lifeline of digestion and visceral homeostasis.
Course: Descends the neck in the Carotid Sheath along with the Vagosympathetic trunk and Common Carotid Artery.

Pathology—Laryngeal Hemiplegia ("Roaring"): Neuropathy of the left recurrent laryngeal nerve (common in horses, rare in cattle) causes paralysis of the CAD muscle. The arytenoid cartilage collapses into the airway during inspiration, creating an audible roar. The left side is more vulnerable due to the longer course around the heart.
The dorsal and ventral vagal trunks control the intricate motility cycles of the rumen, reticulum, and omasum (eructation, regurgitation, remastication). Damage to these trunks (from traumatic reticuloperitonitis/hardware disease, or surgical transection) causes Vagal Indigestion (Hoflund Syndrome)—characterized by functional stenosis, rumen atony, and failure of eructation.
Unique Origin: Arises from both the cervical spinal cord (spinal root) and medulla (cranial root).
Function: Motor to the muscles of the neck and shoulder: Trapezius, Omotransversarius, Sternocephalicus, and Cleidocephalicus.
Clinical: Damage causes inability to elevate shoulder or turn neck effectively.
