- Path: Runs fused with median nerve proximally (Ansa Axillaris), then dives between biceps and brachialis

THE ELBOW FLEXOR & MEDIAL SENSORY SUPPLIER
The Musculocutaneous nerve serves dual roles: motor control of the primary elbow flexors and sensory innervation of the medial forearm.
ORIGIN & FUSION:
Arises from C6-C7. Unlike other species where it separates early, in cattle it runs distally fused with the median nerve in the proximal arm forming the Ansa Axillaris loop around the axillary artery. This is both a landmark and a surgical hazard.
MOTOR COURSE:
Separates from median nerve and dives deep between:
• Biceps Brachii (cranial)
• Brachialis (caudal)
MOTOR TARGETS:
• Biceps Brachii: Primary elbow flexor, also stabilizes shoulder via its tendon
• Brachialis: Synergistic elbow flexor, powerful in cattle for pulling limb forward during recovery
Functional Note: These muscles are essential for the 'recovery stroke'—pulling the advanced limb back toward the body during the stride.
SENSORY DISTRIBUTION:
Distal continuation becomes the Medial Cutaneous Antebrachial Nerve:
• Exits between biceps and brachialis
• Supplies skin on medial aspect of forearm from elbow to carpus
• Used to test C6-C7 integrity
CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE:
Motor Deficit: Weakens elbow flexion but often clinically masked because:
1. Extensor tone (triceps/radial) often dominates in standing cattle
2. Gravity assists flexion during swing phase
3. Weight bearing appears normal
Deficit only apparent during attempts at rapid flexion or climbing.
Sensory Deficit: Anesthesia of medial forearm skin. Useful for neuroanatomic localization (differentiates from C8-T1 lesions which spare this area).
ASSOCIATION WITH AXILLARY ARTERY:
Because of the Ansa Axillaris relationship, hematoma or thrombosis of axillary artery frequently affects both median AND musculocutaneous nerves simultaneously.
