Intervertebral joints: between bodies of adjacent vertebrae — symphysis (cartilaginous, with intervertebral disc).
Synovial articular process joints: between cranial and caudal articular processes — interlocking in lumbar region.
Lumbosacral joint (L6-S1): most movable joint of the back; epidural anaesthesia ('lumbosacral epidural') given here in dogs/horses.
Sacroiliac joint: synovial + fibrous; transfers weight from spine to pelvis.
📚 DETAILED DESCRIPTION:
JOINTS OF THE LUMBAR REGION

1. Intervertebral Joints (between vertebral bodies):
• Type: Symphysis (cartilaginous joint).
• Components: Two flat surfaces of adjacent vertebral bodies + an intervertebral disc (annulus fibrosus around a soft nucleus pulposus).
• Allows compression, slight bending; absorbs shocks.

2. Articular Process (Facet) Joints:
• Type: Plane synovial joints between cranial and caudal articular processes.
• In lumbar vertebrae of ox these processes are deeply interlocked like cupped hands → very rigid, prevents rotation.

3. Lumbosacral Joint (L6-S1):
• The most flexible joint of the spine — combination of intervertebral + facet joints.
• Allows greatest flexion-extension in the back ('hip flick' in galloping dog).
Lumbosacral epidural site — long needle through L6-S1 interarcuate space into epidural space (cranial epidural).

4. Sacroiliac Joint:
• Auricular (ear-shaped) surfaces of ilium meet sacrum.
• Combination of synovial joint (cranially) + syndesmosis (caudally) reinforced by strong dorsal & ventral sacroiliac ligaments.
• Transfers body weight from spine to hindlimb.
• Sacroiliac injury can follow slipping or trauma in cattle; 'hunter's bump' is chiefly an equine clinical term for prominence/asymmetry of the tubera sacrale.

5. Costal Joints (last ribs):
• Capitular (between rib head and bodies of two thoracic vertebrae) + Tubercular (between rib tubercle and transverse process).

// COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS

OX Lumbar interlocking very strong — limits rotation. Sacroiliac injury may follow slipping; avoid using the chiefly equine term 'hunter's bump' as a routine bovine diagnosis.
HORSE Lumbosacral joint important for galloping ('powerstroke'). Sacroiliac strain is a common cause of obscure hindlimb lameness.
DOG Lumbosacral disc disease ('cauda equina syndrome') common in older large breeds.
CLINICAL RELEVANCE
Lumbosacral epidural: a species- and procedure-specific technique requiring careful dosing and awareness that the spinal cord extends to about S1 in adult cattle. Routine bovine obstetrical caudal epidurals are usually sacrococcygeal or first intercoccygeal. Sacroiliac injury: may cause pain or tuber sacrale asymmetry; the term 'hunter's bump' is used chiefly in horses. Disc Disease (dogs): Hansen Type I in chondrodystrophic breeds, Type II in older large breeds.
